In Uttarakhand, the parties doing politics of regional concerns could not open the lock of power. The people of the mountain had high hopes from the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal which led the state movement. But the history of the four assembly elections held so far in the state shows that while regional political parties managed to capture power in Uttar Pradesh, regional parties withered away despite public sentiments and prospects.

JMM’s flag hoisted in Jharkhand, UKD marginalized in Uttarakhand
In the year 2000, the then Atal government created three new states Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. In the politics of Jharkhand, the regional party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is established as a strong political force. At present, the command of power is in the hands of Hemant Soren of JMM. But this good fortune did not remain for the regional parties operating in Uttarakhand. Despite being a symbol of people’s aspirations, identity and sentiments, the UKD failed to garner public opinion.

Your state remained incomplete, the dream of your government
Former Vice Chancellor of Kumaon University, Dr. DD Pant founded the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) on 26 July 1979. Then it was a dream that UKD would lead the fight for a separate state for the public concerns of the mountainous region of Uttarakhand, which is completely different from the geographical, economic, social and cultural conditions. We will have our own state and our government will be formed.

Arie keep on waking up hope
From the time of Uttar Pradesh, Eri kept on raising hopes of the prospects of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal. He was MLA from Didihat assembly seat thrice from 1985 to 1996. After the formation of Uttarakhand state in 2002, Eri again reached the assembly.

After the formation of the state, the interim government of BJP was formed in Uttarakhand. This was a period of transition for regional politics. This was the time when the people of the state had to decide whether to go with the regional parties or support the national parties. But the opinion of some areas of the mountain was clear. Therefore, in the first assembly election of the new state, UKD registered its presence by winning four seats. But the UKD, which started the political innings with fours, was out of the assembly on zero till the fourth election.

Even regional party could not become an option
Due to the dominance of BJP and Congress and the mutual fight between UKD, Uttarakhand Raksha Morcha emerged in the state. Uttarakhand Parivartan Party, Uttarakhand People’s Party tried their luck in the elections. As an alternative to the UKD, the Defense Front also hit the ground running in the elections. But all this did not help. The people sidelined this regional party. The party’s top leader, former MP TPS, merged the party with AAP. Meanwhile, Ukrand also split into two parts.

BSP’s elephant gasped after election
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as a regional party performed brilliantly by winning seven seats in the first assembly elections of the state. But election after election, its situation worsened and the BSP’s elephant started gasping in front of the political moves of the national parties. However, his performance was limited to Haridwar district. The BSP could not even open the account in the 2017 Vis Elections. The SP had a bad position from the very first election.
