Summary

The State Electricity Consumer Council says that the transmission network going into private hands is against the interest of the public. It will be opposed at every level.

The State Electricity Consumer Council will unite consumer organizations across the country against the privatization policy of the Union Power Ministry. The council has announced to oppose it at all levels, terming the efforts to hand over the transmission network to private hands as against consumer interest.

Consumer Council President Awadhesh Kumar Verma says that to implement the plan of power privatization, the Union Power Ministry is making new laws day by day from behind the scenes. Whether it is the Consumer Rights Act or the Revamp scheme or the plan to install smart prepaid meters, all these consumers will benefit more than the less private households. Now the role of giving transmission network to private hands is also being prepared.

Verma said that the transmission network in all the states is in good shape and private houses are keeping an eye on it. They want to take over the transmission network somehow. To establish a monopoly in the distribution sector.

Verma said that in the last five years, maximum improvement has taken place in the transmission sector. Transmission line losses are only 3.33 per cent, which proves that there will be better results in future. The way the central government is engaged in the campaign of privatization through joint ventures, there are clear indications that it wants to privatize the entire energy sector.
