Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the ‘PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan’ today. Under this scheme of Rs 100 lakh crore, 16 ministries including rail and road will be connected through digital medium. Under this scheme, infrastructure development projects will be accelerated.

What is Gati Shakti National Master Plan?
Under this scheme, various ministries and state government infrastructure projects like Bharatmala, Sagarmala, Inland Waterways, Dry Lands, Ports, Udaan will be included in the construction, design of any scheme.

The ‘PM Gati Shakti’ scheme will reduce the cost of projects and the expenditure on maintenance, while new employment opportunities will be created. It is a digital platform connecting 16 ministries including rail and road, which will accelerate the development of infrastructure projects worth about Rs 100 lakh crore. This was announced by PM Modi from the ramparts of the Red Fort on 15 August.

No plan will get entangled in the file
It is a common practice in the country that somewhere a road is built and after a few days a new road is dug for laying cables. Similarly, after spending hundreds of crores of rupees, many projects get stalled because clearances from the Ministry of Forest and Environment are not available. ‘PM Gati Shakti Yojana’ will help in solving such problems. For this, a group of 16 ministries has been formed, which is mainly related to infrastructure. This includes ministries like Railways, Road Transport, Ships, IT, Textiles, Petroleum, Energy, Aviation. The ongoing projects of these ministries or the plans to be completed by 2024-25 will be put under ‘Gati Shakti Yojana’.

The pace of development will get like this

  • The regional connectivity under UDAN (UDAN) in the country will be accelerated through Gati Shakti Yojana. The number of airports/heliports/water aerodromes will increase to 220 by the year 2024-25.
  • The National Highways operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will be expanded to two lakh km in length by 2024-25.
  • Defense production will also accelerate significantly. There are plans to build two defense corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with an investment of about Rs 20,000 crore.
  • With this scheme, the cargo handling capacity of railways in the country will be increased from 1200 MT to 1600 MT by the year 2024-25. This will also accelerate the construction of two dedicated freight corridors.
  • The plan is to double the gas pipeline network in the country to 34,500 km by 2024-25.
  • Gati Shakti will play an important role in the government’s plan to connect every state with a natural gas pipeline by 2027.
  • By the year 2024, the Department of Telecommunications has a plan to lay 35 lakh km of optical fiber network. Similarly, the transmission network will be increased to 4.52 lakh km circuit by the Ministry of Power.
  • The food processing industry aims to set up about 200 mega food parks in the country, increase fishing clusters to 202, 38 electronic clusters with a turnover of 15 lakh crores, 90 textile clusters and 110 pharma and medical devices clusters.
  • It is proposed to build four industrial nodes under the master plan. One such industrial node will be at Dadri in UP, Tumukur in Karnataka and Bidkin in Maharashtra.
