After winning the West Bengal elections with a bang, the Trinamool Congress is busy expanding its party. In this episode, the process of leaders of other parties including Congress joining TMC is also going on. West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee is in Delhi and in her presence on Tuesday, Congress leader Kirti Azad, former Congress Haryana unit president and former party leader Ashok Tanwar and former Janata Dal (U) general secretary Pavan Varma will also be present. Joined TMC.

Amar Ujala Digital has talked to Pavan Varma and Ashok Tanwar and tried to know what is the real reason for joining Trinamool Congress and what are the policies of the party and its expansion plans in other states. We have spoken to both the leaders on all issues.

Here are the excerpts from the conversation with Pawan Verma.

Pavan Varma was an officer of the Indian Foreign Service before joining politics. He was counted among the strong leaders of JDU and was considered close to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. He has also been an advisor to Nitish Kumar. Verma was made a Rajya Sabha member in 2014 and remained an MP till 2016. He was considered against the alliance of BJP and JDU. He was expelled from the party along with political strategist Prashant Kishor after he opposed the JD(U)’s stand on the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Question: What is the real reason for joining Trinamool Congress?

Answer: After leaving JD(U), I always thought that the country needs a strong opposition. I believe that TMC is emerging as a strong force in the country. After winning the West Bengal elections, the leadership of Mamta Banerjee seems to be energetic. She is a courageous woman and has all the qualities to become the only recognized leader of the opposition. Trinamool Congress strongly opposes BJP. Therefore, this party is on the way to become a strong opposition which can give a tough answer to the anti-national and anti-people policies of the ruling party. That’s why I decided to join TMC, because now everyone is accepting that Mamata Banerjee is the only leader in the country who can give a fight to BJP. Mamta Banerjee will be a part of national politics in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Question: You believe that Congress is not playing the role of a strong opposition?

Answer: What will I comment on the condition of Congress, it is telling its own position. But I must say that the way the Congress is scattered and is shrinking in the states, in such a situation other strong forces cannot sit silently. The demand for a nationwide and nationwide opposition is democratic, for which one or the other party will have to come forward. No one can and should not have a permanent right to power. TMC is moving out of Bengal’s purview to become a nationwide opposition.

Question: What will be the national form of TMC? Will the party form its organization in all the states? Answer:

Answer: You will soon see TMC in a new national form. There will be different policies for each state and its strong organization will be formed in every state. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh or whatever state you may be talking about, there will definitely be an organization of TMC.

Question: You have been in JD(U) with Prashant Kishor. Kishor has been an advisor to Mamta. It is being added that you will work there to weaken the JD(U) in Bihar?

Answer: I will work not to weaken anyone, but to strengthen TMC. Whether the responsibility is given for Bihar or at the national level. I have joined the party now, but whatever responsibility the party gives, I will fulfill it.

Question: Leaders of many other parties including BJP, Congress are joining TMC, in this Prashant Kishor’s big role is being considered. Did Kishor convince you too to join the party?

Answer: You should ask this to Prashant Kishor. This can be inferred from the whole episode. I believe that the political understanding of PK and the experience he has is definitely benefiting the party.

Question: What was the reason for the bad relations with JD(U)?

Answer: I had a close relationship with Nitish Kumar. He has done a lot for me. But when it comes to principles, there can be no compromise. I was opposing NRC. Prashant Kishor was also opposing it along with me. We were unable to compromise on principles and both of us were expelled from the party together. In this way I had to distance myself from Nitish Kumar. Ashok Tanwar- Tanwar, who is counted among the bright young leaders of Haryana, has been an MP from Sirsa Lok Sabha seat. He was considered close to Rahul Gandhi. He has also been the President of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee. During the Haryana Assembly elections in the year 2019, he had alleged irregularities and corruption in ticket distribution. After which he had to leave the Congress. After separating from Congress, he formed his own party Apna Bharat Morcha.

Question: What did you see in TMC that you liked to join this party?

Answer: TMC has the potential and potential to take on the BJP. There is only one Mamata Banerjee in the whole country who can clash with PM Modi. We were fighting with the BJP earlier also and have now joined Didi (Mamata Banerjee) to strengthen her hand. If you want to do something for the country, then there is no bigger party than TMC for this. If we look at the grassroots leader, simplicity, dedication and the spirit of the country, then for the face of the opposition, the above face is none other than Mamta Banerjee.

Question: What is your reaction to this decision in Haryana?

Answer: Not only Haryana but since I have joined TMC, I am getting congratulations from all over the country and especially the youth have justified my decision very much. This has given me strength.

Question: Did you not get an option in BJP or did you see future in other parties of Haryana?

Answer: Those who are friendly to the farmers, with the workers, want to remove the unemployment of the youth, the only future for them is in TMC. People have seen the anti-farmer face of BJP. TMC can become the only option to defeat BJP. Congress is doing politics of nexus and it is getting weaker day by day.

Question: How will the Trinamool Congress expand in Haryana?

Answer: Yesterday when I joined the party in the presence of Didi (Mamata Banerjee), she said ‘Jai Haryana’. He said that Haryana is not far from Bengal. By this you can understand what is the plan of the party? We will form an organization in Haryana and not only this, we will show it by winning 10 out of 10 seats in the 2024 elections.

Question: This claim of yours does not seem to be a statement made in enthusiasm?

Answer: Not at all. Rather, I am doing it with full gusto that we will bring 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana. When BJP won 10 seats in Haryana in 2014, how strong was its organization in Haryana? We will work hard TMC has so many conscientious workers that they are ready to start from the ground up in Haryana. Now our fight with BJP and Congress has started in Haryana. Now we will not allow Congress to become the main opposition party. Just understand that it is our goal now to clash with the BJP and stop the Congress.

Question: What will be your role in Haryana?

Answer: As told you that it is our priority to make organization of TMC in the entire state. Apart from this, whatever role the party asks to play at the national level, I am ready for it. Right now the focus is on Goa elections.
