The country’s Chief Justice NV Raman on Sunday said lakhs of people can learn about the Indian judicial system through the functioning of trial courts and district judiciary. Therefore nothing is more essential than to protect, preserve and encourage the independence and integrity of the judiciary at all levels. He said that the Indian judiciary has been at the fore in shaping a welfare state. The decisions of the constitutional courts of the country have enabled social democracy to flourish.

The Chief Justice said this at the concluding function of a legal awareness and outreach campaign organized by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). He said that despite being a part of our welfare state, the beneficiaries are not getting the benefits at the desired level. People’s aspirations to lead a dignified life are often faced with challenges. Poverty is one of these main challenges. We cannot imagine a healthy judiciary without a strong judicial system at the grassroots level.

Addressing the Chief Justices and Judges of the High Courts directly for the first time, CJI Raman said that the responsibilities which have been assigned to us by the Constitution, together we are fulfilling them with full honesty and commitment. The immense faith that the public has shown in the judiciary as the last resort to their problems is a testimony to this fact. He said that the Supreme Court and all the High Courts are highly aware of the constitutional scheme, which we all respect in letter and spirit.
